Bamlak Alemayehu

Legal Director, Mining, Real Estate and NGO Practice Groups

Bamlak Alemayehu is the Legal Director at Mehrteab and Getu Advocates LLP (MLA). Before joining MLA, Bamlak served as an Acting Director and Senior Legal Expert at the Legal Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Mines. During his service at the Ministry, which lasted for more than seven years, he took part in drafting policy and legal frameworks, mining and petroleum agreements, and other agreements and memorandums of understanding, and lead negotiations. Moreover, Bamlak worked as a part-time legal advisor for a foreign mining company, where he drafted agreements and lead negotiations. At MLA, he leads the Mining, Real Estate, and NGO practices.

Advised a foreign mining company with regards to the Expropriation Compensation Procedure and drafted Expropriation Compensation Agreements;
Participated in drafting Mining and Petroleum Policies, Proclamations, Regulations, Directives, and Mining and Petroleum Agreements and other various legal agreements;
Led a negotiating team in a high profile mining-related investment dispute worth over $ 200 Million;
Was a member of a negotiation team in connection with Gas Commercialization Agreement, Sale Purchase Agreement and other subsidiary Agreements;
Developed and negotiated a Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding and Implementation Framework Agreement executed with one of the renowned Schools of Mines in the USA;
Participated in the drafting and negotiation of a Framework Agreement concerning a Gas to Liquid (GTL) Processing Plant Project;
Coordinated a project for capacity building services in the mining and petroleum sectors within the Ministry of Mines hosted by the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF), funded by the African Development Bank;
Served as an acting Chairperson and Technical Assistant of the Codification Task Force (CTF) within the Ministry of Mines hosted by the Supporting the Ministry of Mines (SUMM) Project, sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Resource Development (CIRD).
